To advance in my photographic career, it would be a good idea to approach some photographers in my local or surrounding areas to offer my assistance. This would be valuable for me to learn the business from the inside, to see how everything works first hand and to eventually learn how to gain a wider audience of my own.
Approaching other businesses and offering a promotional shoot would be another avenue to explore. This would help to increase exposure for both the business and for myself.
Alternatively, I need to focus on the idea of making a job, rather than finding a job. It is hard to find other photographers who are willing to hire an assistant, even a volunteer assistant, especially with wedding photography.
My website currently is very generalised, displaying my photography from both personal side projects as well as photography from my professional practice. This is fine in the short term, since I don’t have much of either right now that I am able to display. But as my work grows, and I find the niche I’d like to work towards, I need to start to consider separating my work between two different platforms.
A prospective client looking for a specific thing would much prefer to believe that their photographer is specialised rather than appearing to be dabbling in the area.
